Food poisoning is caused when we consume contaminated beverages and food items. Even though the name suggests that food poisoning is something extremely dangerous, most of the cases are mild and do not even require medical attention if kept well hydrated. The symptoms start to appear for the food poisoning infection within the first few hours of consumption and can last for weeks.
The basic symptoms that are noticed are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, weakness, child, loss of appetite and fever.
Food Poisoning Infection – Causes
The food can get contaminated at any point of the process may it be the growing or the shipping. We must ensure that the food is cooked correctly at the correct temperature to avoid the food becoming stale. The food must be stored below 5C and while heating should not be left on high temperature for too long. Those who are handling the food should also take into consideration their hygiene and of the workplace. We should avoid consuming food items that have crossed their expiry date. As certain bacteria grow in moist atmosphere, while storing leftover food items we should ensure they are sealed properly and consumed within two days.
Food Poisoning Infection – Types
The most common transmitter of germs if bacteria and later viruses and parasites. Some of the common types are mentioned below:
Campylobacter: being one of the most common reasons for food poisoning in the United Kingdom, it is passed through raw and undercooked meat, untreated water, and unpasteurized milk. The symptoms last for almost a week.
Salmonella: usually transmitted through raw eggs, raw meat, milk and dairy products. The symptoms last for four to seven days.
Listeria: usually found in ready to eat foods and pre-packed food items which have an expiry date mentioned on them. The symptoms pass within 3 days but have been proven to be extremely dangerous for pregnant women as the infection causes complications for the unborn child and could also result in a miscarriage.
E.coli: caused by bacteria that is found in the digestive systems of animals and human. This can cause serious illness and mostly caused by eating undercooked beef or consuming unpasteurized milk. The symptoms last for a few weeks.
Shigella: passed through food items that are washed or have any contact with contaminated water. The symptoms start to appear within a week and can last up to 10 days.
Food Poisoning Infection Treatment
Patients that are suffering from food poisoning must keep themselves hydrated at all times and should ensure that the fluids that they are losing through diarrhea and vomiting is being replaced. There are certain over the counter medications available to deal with the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; however they are advised not to take it as it further prolongs the germs being present in the body. Hydration through oral rehydration solutions are encouraged which are rich in electrolytes and minerals which helps boost the immune system. Those with a weaker immune system should be extremely careful of the food poisoning infection as the severity can go unnoticed and cause damage.
